Linen lovin’

Or shall I say, I love linens!  See, this little love affair started when I worked as a Design Consultant for the amazing shop on the Country Club Plaza here in KC – Terrasi Home.

If there is one thing I will splurge on it is quality linens because they will last forever and you spend a third of your life in bed (although I am thinking I haven’t hit this quota with littles ones lately).  And don’t judge, I do NOT have time to iron my linens!  I actually had linen “linens” recently because it went with the “look”.

Egyptian Cotton - Percale and Lyocell Linens

Egyptian Cotton – Percale and Lyocell Linens

Here is my quick tutorial when it comes to picking out linens;

  1. Go for Egyptian Cotton over Pima Cotton – These are longer staple fibers which means they will hold up and last longer and not peel over time
  2. Reach for a Percale if you want cool-crisp-cotton-my-grandmothers-type-linens which are going to be more stiff in feel at first but over time buttery soft and cooler in the summer months.  A percale will also have a more dull appearance and not a shiny silky look.
  3. Grab a Sateen if you want more silky look and shiny appearance.  These will tend to feel warmer.
  4. Disregard thread count – some amazing linens will be a 300 thread count – if these are Egyptian Cotton using long staple fibers these will feel just as good as other higher thread count sheets – the thread count term is an American term.
  5. Try Lyocell which is eco friendly and derived from sustainable wood cellulose.  It is absorbent and helps with moisture control.  Also great for sensitive skin.

I won’t show you my linen closet because it is a bit out of control – but currently we have Lyocell Percale Flat, Fitted and Pillow cases in plain white for our “sheet set”.   We have a Egyptian Cotton Sateen Duvet cover and Euro shams in a bone color featuring a beautiful hemstitch detail.  I am a sucker for down – so we have a down / feather bed on top of our mattress and down pillows.

Then I topped off the bedding with a custom monogram in turquoise and silk decorative pillows to incorporate more detail and color.

I can say I did splurge on our master bedroom linens but I know that I will have these items for a very long time.  I have had these items that I do rotate out with other sheet sets for almost four years and they are in amazing shape.  They actually get softer in time.

So go see Ursula, Sarah, Mary Beth and Megan at Terrasi Home – these lovely ladies can give you a full tutorial – and for all you out of town, you can order online!

Stay tuned for more tips on linens to come!  Time to go crawl in bed.

Master Bedroom Inspiration

I’m super excited that the time has finally come to redo our master bedroom! I mean, we have been living with carpet in our bathroom (why do builders do that???) for almost two years!! We had several other things on our list to get done before tackling the master, but we’re ready! So I’ve scoured Pinterest for ideas and want to share the direction I’m going to get your feedback.

First, I’m planning to redo my DIY upholstered headboard. I currently have black and white stripes, but I’m thinking of going with a grey suede. I’m totally going to add nail heads to it like the one below. The room was designed by Kerrisdale Design. I’m loving the bright creamy walls, white side tables, and white bedding with pops of color. That’s what I’m going for.

This room, featured by Belle Maison, looks so luxurious with the charcoal grey, satin-y headboard, and gold accessories. I adore the simple circle artwork on both sides of the bed, and I’ve pinned this photo because I’m going to do my own version. Who can’t make circles on some paper and frame it? So simple, but I think it’s so fun!

What I’m trying to figure out is what accent color(s) to do. I’ve thought about corral, pale blue, rose, emerald green…as you can see I really haven’t nailed that down. This adorable room was featured on House of Turquoise, which is one of my favorite blogs to visit. What accent color do you think I should do?
